Sunday evening dread can put an abrupt end to an otherwise enjoyable weekend. While it may seem like you’re the only one who feels anxious about the coming work week, you’re far from alone! That familiar knot in your stomach is called the Sunday Scaries, and it’s incredibly common.

Of course, some level of work stress is healthy and can drive you to make positive changes in your life. But when that stress turns into stomach-churning anxiety that ruins your weekend, it’s time to do something about it!

Spend Your Weekend on Self-Care

You’ve been running around all week taking care of others. Dedicate your weekend to you! Even just an hour of “me-time” can help alleviate stress and improve your mood.

  • Try journaling to work through your emotions in a healthy and constructive way.

  • Pop in some headphones, block out the world, and enjoy your favorite music.

  • Don’t be afraid to say no when your plate is getting too full.

  • Exercising—even if you’d rather do anything else—is one of the best things you can do in the name of self-care.

Make Sleep a Priority

For many of us, sleep is an afterthought. But your sleep quality and quantity can have a serious impact on your mood!

  • Studies show that sleep deprivation can raise your anxiety levels by as much as 30%.

  • Watch out for signs that you may be sleep-deprived.

  • Try some science-backed strategies to improve your sleep, like turning your bedroom into a distraction-free sleep oasis.

Tackle Underlying Issues

The Sunday Scaries could be an indication that something is wrong in your professional life. Reflect on your feelings so you can make some positive changes!

  • Think about whether your career aligns with your personality.

  • Too much on your plate? Talk to your manager about reducing your workload.

  • If you feel like you’ve hit a plateau at your job, it might be time to pursue a new position.

  • Dealing with toxic people at work? Learn how to distance yourself and set effective boundaries.

Don’t let the Sunday Scaries steal your weekend. Whether it means making a career change or adding some self-care to your weekend routine, start taking steps today to alleviate weekend anxiety so you can enjoy the relaxing rest you deserve!
